Virtual Art Studio Visit

Last month, we gathered a group of art enthusiasts and made a virtual visit to the New York art studio of Jessie Edelman, an up-and-coming contemporary artist with a beautiful and extensive body of work. We explored Jessie’s studio, got up close and personal with her paint palette, and learned what inspires her work and how she translates her vision onto canvas. Here, we’ll recap some of the evening.

Our event was co-hosted by Christine Minas, art advisor of Christine Minas Fine Art and Elizabeth Denny, a partner at Denny Dimin Gallery. Christine works with private clients, corporations and others to advise on the acquisition of art for new homes, help art collectors build a world-class collection, curate temporary exhibitions for corporate organizations, and more. Elizabeth focuses on introducing young and emerging artists like Jessie to collectors, curators, and critics.

We opened up the event with an ice breaker question to share our favorite artist, gallery, or museum. Many of us connected on Matisse and highlighted the Art Institute of Chicago as a beloved choice. Elizabeth shared insights on the changing landscape of art galleries in the age of a pandemic. While these galleries are in small spaces, they have been able to open safely by following public health protocols and by having patrons make appointments to create a safe experience. Galleries are also taking advantage of technology and utilizing video conferencing to create virtual events to continue their work of bringing art to the public.

Elizabeth has been enthusiastically representing Jessie since 2016. Jessie is praised as an artist with an expansive art history background. Jessie uses Cezanne and Matisse-inspired color palettes and noted that while there are hundreds of colors to choose from when procuring her paints, she’s loyal to the original colors that artists used centuries ago.

Jessie gave us a glimpse of the dinner-table sized, rolling mixing palette. She uses oil paint and attributes herself as a traditionalist when it comes to oil painting.

Elizabeth also noted Jessie’s ability to incorporate contemporary visual culture, and the feministic commentary that appears throughout her work.

Jessie welcomed us into her art studio and into her creative world. Jessie’s favorite museum is the Botero Museum in Colombia. Although, like many of us in the audience, Jessie was inspired by the Art Institute of Chicago, and began painting at the age of 10 after visiting this museum. Jessie grew up in the Midwest and had parents who were artists and encouraged art exploration. Her father had a creative space for her and her siblings to explore different mediums of art. Jessie gets inspiration from being outside. Many of her works include perspective and will have multiple point of views.

After walking us through several of her paintings, Jessie graciously answered some of our questions.
