April 23, 2020
It has been over a month since the shelter-in-place order for six Bay Area counties was announced and our lives were abruptly changed. For many of us, our emotions can closely mimic the volatile ups and downs of the stock market. We once dreaded facing our daily headache of a commute, but now we’d like nothing more than to return to that routine, which offered us the time to listen to our favorite music or podcast or just the space to think. Much of the challenge stems from our being thrust into a new arena to face an unknown enemy, unprepared for the loss of our daily rituals, our work, and sadly, the loss of many lives. In our 24-hour news cycle culture today, we have become preoccupied with the latest developments around the world and, for those in our industry, what they mean to our investments. However, our humanity recognizes that this current crisis is a humanitarian threat above all else.
By nature, this is unlike the recession of 2008-09 or the Great Depression, both of which were brought on by economic shocks. This was triggered by a biological phenomenon. Over the course of two months, the lives of 40,000 people in the United States were prematurely taken. When we pause and reflect on what this really means, it hits us that 40,000 families have lost something of immeasurable value that cannot be recovered. Many more are faced with the challenge of choosing between their health and their jobs. In our scramble to fill our roles at work, at home, or at school, we can forget to treasure the meaningful people around us and the moments we share. Events like this seldom come but they remind us to hold closely, now more than ever, the people and things dearest to us.
Our government and governments around the world have taken many steps to reduce the risks we face as a result of COVID-19. Having said that, much responsibility falls on us as individuals and citizens to do our part to safeguard ourselves, our loved ones and our communities. We fulfill this when we keep our distance and wear masks if exposure cannot be avoided. When we internalize this with the level of care that is needed, we contribute in ways that are critical to this fight. The fact that more of us acting responsibly led to a decline in the rate of new cases and deaths is promising. Also encouraging is that more people are taking responsibility and displaying the compassion to help others when the world needs it most. In this way, we can be the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel for each other.
We have had the honor of serving you over the course of many years, through a number of adversities and successes. Though our current adversity is painful, we have confidence in the strength and resilience we built together through our past challenges. We look forward to sharing our lives with you again at the end of this period. Until then, we wish you health.
